Leatherette Mod for the Pentax 17
I added leatherette to the back of my Pentax 17, and you should too! It's easy, and improves the camera's look and feel. I predict Pentax will offer leatherette kits for free to everyone who bought the new Pentax 17.

Pentax 17 First Impressions and Sample Images

I've had the Pentax 17 for two days now (June 27, 2024), and have shot two rolls of film, color and black and white. These are my impressions of the camera so far, including some thoughts on the design and one minor issue I've had using the camera. I also examine Pentax's warning about using filters on the camera, and my experience so far shooting with an ND filter. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:22 My...

    I'm really left wondering what the decision making process was at Pentax regarding the leatherette on the back. Did they intend to cover the back with leatherette but then decide leaving it off would be a quirky feature people would like? And was the big screw for the battery cover an aesthetic choice to bring an industrial feel to the build? Someone in another video implied that the two screws on the front were fake and just there for looks.

    PPP cameras in the UK sells different colors that are custom-cut for the Pentax 17, mine just shipped yesterday. It seems like a no-brainer to add this to the camera

    I found my Pro Tour also had strange slow points-and a computer showed that my mph did slow down at those points. I traced it to cadence-something about the geometry rewards higher cadences and punishes lower ones. The issue largely went away with a 46/28 up front. Hope that helps, but ymmv!

    That really does look much better now, however you may have voided your warranty? No? Nah probably not. I’m more thinking everybody will get a better cover screw with a nylon locking back washer. Just press it on. One other thing somebody sort of griped about is that on bokeh mode it really doesn’t shoot very wide open. That’s because at its max 1/350th speed it can’t. As it is, you won’t see any bokeh with film more than 100 iso, maybe 50.

    • @campyonlyguy
      @campyonlyguy 4 дні тому

      I'm going to try the Bokeh mode with an ND filter, which should let the camera open the aperture more. Totally agree about the screw. I plan to stop by my local hardware store and find something flatter.

      I think they meant to put leatherette on the back of the camera but for some reason didn't. I'm going on record as predicting that Pentax will send everyone who bought the first edition of the 17 the leatherette pieces for the back. And future editions will ship with covering front and back.

  • @s_t_r_a_y_e_d
    @s_t_r_a_y_e_d 6 днів тому

    You explained why I don't like this camera to me. It's pretty but it is not well engineered. The battery cover screw, the weird grip, the 5 different textures/finishes, the zone focus, the lack of any manual mode... I know Pentax was working with the bottom of the barrel and no executive support but this is a rough product.

    • @campyonlyguy
      @campyonlyguy 6 днів тому

      It does seem rushed, as though they were working to an internal deadline and decided to ship a 90% product. It does seem rushed, as though they were working to an internal deadline and decided to ship a 90% product. My guess is that this camera will be improved upon in a future autofocus iteration. I also predict that sometime this summer Ricoh/Pentax will ship out precut leatherette pieces for the back of the camera to everyone who bought this version (and at the same time, the 17 will start shipping with leatherette on the front and rear). I cut some leatherette from a recovering kit that I had and applied it to the back of the 17, and it looks and feels 100% better.

      Me too, I only use Lightroom (not classic) I can’t be bothered to learn photoshop or the classic version. I scan using the v550, black and white only. I send colour to the lab. But I find if I add plus 20 in sharpness in Lightroom, a little clarity and a little texture I get a nice balance between grain and sharpness. At least in my opinion but you might find another combination more pleasing 👍🏻

    18:17 - That's me on the right in a Red/White jersey (Audax England). I still remember leaving Brest feeling fast and fresh (unlike in 2011). The only difference was that I made it to Paris in 2011. I was totally unprepared for how cold it got overnight after leaving Brest. My neck and shoulders cramped up (as they tend to do in cold weather) and I just couldn't shake it off. I quit about 800km into the ride. Ironically it would have been just as quick to ride to Paris as figuring out the public transport involved. If you have never ridden with sleep-deprivation it's difficult to convey just how bad your decision making can get (or how difficult buttons and zips can become).

    Living in France I can tell you the French adore cycling (even if more from an armchair perspective) and even more so the Tour de France, every year there are millions of people lining the roads very enthusiastically cheering the riders on whatever the nationality. It's indeed the same for PBP, even if the event is a 'couple' of notches down from the TdF, they are happy, proud etc to welcome, encourage everybody with cheering, clapping and offerings of free refreshments in this act of endurance. They are doing their best to make the experience more of a memorable event.
